Fujisan Hongu Sengen-Taisha Shrine

This shrine is the head shrine of all 1,300 Sengen Jinja shrines that worship Mt. Fuji.

As the head shrine of all 1,300 Sengen Jinja shrines in Japan, Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine is believed to house the spirit of Mt. Fuji itself. A rear shrine (okumiya), an outbuilding of the main shrine, is erected at the summit of Mt. Fuji. All of the area above the eighth station on the trail ascending the mountain is a part of the sacred precinct of this rear shrine. Don't leave without seeing Wakutamaike, a pond that gushes with snowmelt from Mt. Fuji.
